Away We Go - A Quick Review

The moment I found out that my favorite author, Dave Eggers, was one of the screenwriters for Away We Go I knew I had to see it. Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) takes us on a beautiful journey with a young couple. Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are in their early thirties and are expecting a child. With no need to stay where they are currently living, they travel the country, searching for a place that is perfect for them to start their family.

The story is told with quirky humor but does not lose its heaviness. This is a couple that wants the best for their child, but is not sure how to provide that. They meet up with old friends, sisters, cousins, who provide funny, honest, and awkward portals into what makes up a family. Burt and Verona are on a journey, a journey to make their child’s life the best that it can be, but also a journey to find who they are. To find what makes them the happiest. They don’t know what they are doing but they are trying their best to do it.

Is this a hipster movie? Yes. Am I a sucker for hipster movies? Yes. But Away We Go is funny, moving, and honest. A must see.
